He studied medicine before turning to art after World War II. Merz's early career involved using everyday materials like glass, metal, and organic items to create installations that questioned industrial society. Notable works include his igloo structures and Fibonacci sequence-based installations. His art is characterized by its integration of art and nature, aiming to create a dialogue between the two.
